A Review on Wire-Fed Directed Energy Deposition Based Metal Additive Manufacturing

نویسندگان

چکیده

Metal additive manufacturing has reached a level where products and components can be directly fabricated for applications requiring small batches customized designs, from tinny body implants to long pedestrian bridges over rivers. Wire-fed directed energy deposition based enables fabricating large parts in cost-effective way. However, achieving reliable mechanical properties, desired structural integrity, homogeneity microstructure grain size is challenging due layerwise-built characteristics. Manufacturing processes, alloy composition, process variables, post-processing of the part strongly affect resultant and, as consequence, component serviceability. This paper reviews advances wire-fed deposition, specifically wire arc metal recent efforts tailoring during shape. The also addresses modeling methods that improve qualification by modifying avoid repetitive trials material waste.

An Overview of Additive Manufacturing of Titanium Components by Directed Energy Deposition: Microstructure and Mechanical Properties

The directed energy deposition (DED) process can be employed to build net shape components or prototypes starting from powder or wires, through a layer-by-layer process. This process provides an opportunity to fabricate complex shaped and functionally graded parts that can be utilized in different engineering applications. DED uses a laser as a focused heat source to melt the in-situ delivered ...

Developing Gradient Metal Alloys through Radial Deposition Additive Manufacturing

Interest in additive manufacturing (AM) has dramatically expanded in the last several years, owing to the paradigm shift that the process provides over conventional manufacturing. Although the vast majority of recent work in AM has focused on three-dimensional printing in polymers, AM techniques for fabricating metal alloys have been available for more than a decade. Here, laser deposition (LD)...

A survey of sensing and control systems for machine and process monitoring of directed-energy, metal-based additive manufacturing

Additive manufacturing of metal parts is, even in the simplest of cases, a complex undertaking. Parts typically involve hundreds or thousands of individual laser or electron-beam deposits, each of which involve a complex interaction between energy source, feedstock, and substrate. During deposition, many of the independent process variables that contribute to overall build quality— such as trav...
